Installing the Windows Community Alpha (experimental)

Experimental Community Alpha. A Windows installer has been built for community testing, but it has not completed the same install validation on a real Windows PC as the tested platforms (macOS Apple Silicon and Linux x64). Expect rough edges, use a test copy of ERPNext, and please report what you find. The download page offers a Windows file only when an experimental build is published; if you see no Windows download, none is available yet.

Requirements

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit; 4 GB of memory; 2 GB of free disk space. No administrator rights are needed — TaktSignal installs for your Windows user only.

Steps

  1. Download only from the official page: taktsignal.cloud/download → Windows — x64. The file is named TaktSignal-<version>-windows-x64-setup.exe.
  2. Verify the download (recommended for an unsigned build): open PowerShell and run Get-FileHash $HOME\Downloads\TaktSignal-<version>-windows-x64-setup.exe, then compare the hash with the SHA-256 on the download page (details).
  3. Run the installer (double-click). Because the Community Alpha installer is not code-signed yet, Windows SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC” and name the publisher as unknown.
  4. If — and only if — you downloaded it from taktsignal.cloud and the SHA-256 matches, click More info, check that the file name is the one you downloaded, and click Run anyway. This allows this one file; it does not change any Windows setting.
  5. Keep the defaults and finish with Open TaktSignal now. The Control Center opens in your browser.
  6. Continue with Getting started, step 4.

Never do this

  • Do not turn off SmartScreen, Microsoft Defender or any other security software to install TaktSignal. If your antivirus quarantines the file, report it (see below) instead of disabling protection.
  • Do not run a TaktSignal installer that came from anywhere other than taktsignal.cloud/download.

Why is Windows experimental?

Windows builds depend on components (for example the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries PostgreSQL needs) that must be packaged and tested on real Windows machines. Until a build has passed install, restart, backup/restore, update and uninstall testing on Windows, it is labelled experimental.

Uninstall

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → TaktSignal → Uninstall (or Start menu → TaktSignal → Uninstall TaktSignal). The uninstaller asks what to do with your data; keeping it is the default. See Uninstall.

Reporting a Windows problem

Windows reports are especially valuable. Include your Windows version, the exact message you saw and, if the Control Center opened, a diagnostics file. See Diagnostics and support.
